Ten winners have been selected from around the world to be provided a Bresser Refractor telescope that has been signed by astronauts to be used during the 100 Hours of Astronomy global event on 10-13 January 2019.

 

In August 2018, IAU100 and the 100 Hours of Astronomy event announced a telescope competition in collaboration with the Belgian initiative Sterren Schitteren voor Iedereen (SSVI) and Universe Awareness (UNAWE).  After the receipt of nearly 200 entries from 47 countries worldwide, 10 winners have been selected to each receive a Bresser Refractor telescope that has been signed by astronauts to support astronomy educational activities with children around the world. These will be used during the 100 Hours of Astronomy Global Project on 10-13 January 2019. Below are the organisations who have been awarded telescopes for the 100 Hours of Astronomy:

• Ethiopian Space Science and Technology Institute, Ethiopia

• Center of Astronomy, Indian Institute of Technology Indore, India

• Association of Amateur Astronomers of León, Nicaragua

• National University of San Antonio Abad of Cusco, Peru

• Astronomical Society Eureka, Serbia

• La Furgoneta Cosmica, Spain

• The Syrian Astronomical Association, Syria

• Physics Department of Busitema University, Uganda

There are still many way in which organisations and individuals can participate in the 100 Hours of Astronomy event taking place from 10-13 January 2019. On the event website, you can browse a variety of resources to help you plan an activity or project, browse registered events, or register an event of your own. We welcome astronomy projects and activities of any duration and of all kinds, including workshops, tours, talks, movies, sky observation activities, classroom projects, lectures, field trips, art projects and more. There will be additional prizes available for participants as well - stay tuned! You can also participate or engage with an existing event that is being organized.
