The IAU100 Endorsed Project 'The Eratosthenes Experiment' will revive the historical method of measuring the Earth's circumference for primary and secondary schools worldwide on 21 March 2019.

The Eratosthenes Experiment, that will be organised on 21 March 2019, gives the opportunity to

teachers/educators to collaborate with their colleagues from other schools around the world and

measure with their students the circumference of the Earth, using simple means. The project aims to reviving the historical measurement method taken by Eratosthenes about 2250 years ago.

Primary and secondary schools are invited to register they coordinates on the projects’ website. The project will connect schools in common regions to record data, collaborate and calculate the Earth’s circumference. Participants can also send a photo of their activities to apply for the opportunity to win a scholarship to attend the 2019 European Science Education Academy Summer School in Greece.

The project coordinated by Ellinogermaniki Agogi has been designed as IAU100 Endorsed project. This project category is intended to provide  large global projects, which satisfy the vision of IAU100, with greater international recognition and an opportunity to connect with other celebrations worldwide. Please visit the IAU100 Endorsed Projects page to review the guidelines for becoming an IAU100 Endorsed project and to apply.
